Disperity Reading Room · Puzzle time

A diner counter, a pencil, and a little time

Some of the pleasures of a Saturday are ordinary ones: finding a seat at a diner, looking through a shop window, or settling in for an evening at home. Saturday, Remembered makes those everyday scenes the starting point for a word search.

In “A Stop at the Diner,” the words include BOOTH, MENU, MILKSHAKE, and PIE. The optional question is simple: “What would you order at the counter?” You can answer it, share a story with someone, or leave it unanswered and enjoy the puzzle.

Actual puzzle page from the approved paperback. Use the PDF to print at actual size; its second page contains the full-size answer.

What the pages actually look like

Each puzzle has its own 8.5-by-11-inch page, a 14-by-14 grid, and 12 words to find. The puzzle letters are 22 point; the alphabetized word lists are 18 point, arranged vertically in two columns. A full-size printed answer follows each puzzle, so checking a word does not require a phone or a website.

The first 24 puzzles use words running right or straight down. Later puzzles add diagonally down-right words. Directions appear on each puzzle, and no words run backward.

Try a page before choosing the book

The free diner sample includes the actual puzzle and its full-size solution. Print the two pages at 100% or actual size on US Letter paper; turn off “fit to page” to preserve the printed scale. A screen can enlarge or shrink the letters, so the printed sample is the more useful way to judge whether this format suits you.

A prompt, without an assignment

The book has 56 original puzzles across everyday themes including neighborhood shops, kitchen activities, handwork, outings, gatherings, and quiet evenings. Each offers an optional memory question. There are no dates to recall and no need to have lived through a particular decade.

If you are choosing a gift, look at the sample with the recipient’s interests in mind: the size of the page, the directions, the word list, and whether familiar scenes appeal to them. The preview shows the experience more clearly than an age label alone.
